Campus Construction Updates

Framing and Grading

The new year is here, and the Campus Center has undergone yet another transformation. We’re astounded at the progress so far, and the pace is only going to get faster in the coming weeks and months!

With the addition of the wooden frames in the “interior” of the building, you can really begin to grasp the scale of the construction. The short clip below shows the view of the basement from the future water-front lawn. In the foreground, the bases of the columns that will support the porch—a beloved feature of the former Dining Hall—can be seen.

Viewed from the south, the basement’s ceiling becomes the floor of the first level. It’s hard to imagine two more stories on top of this level, but it will be here before we know it!

In keeping with Shelter Island fire code requirements, the driveway that runs through campus was widened. The majestic trees by the side of the road were preserved at the small cost of cutting into a narrow strip of the tennis court that serves as the base of our summer tent. This will not impact the footprint of the Performance Tent.

South of Stearns Point Road, windows and doors have been installed in the new Faculty Cabins, which are shaping up beautifully.
