While on Shelter Island, students have a rigorous yet balanced schedule.
A student’s typical schedule includes four hours of uninterrupted personal practice time each morning.
In the afternoons, students rotate their time between private lessons with faculty members, weekly group “studio classes”, chamber music rehearsals or coachings, and free time for recreation, games, or rest.
Weekday evenings are spent with chorus and orchestra rehearsals, and every Friday and Saturday night there is either a faculty concert or a student Works in Progress concert.
In addition to these regularly scheduled weekly activities, many extra activities (both musical and non-musical) happen during the summer. Examples include: chamber music outreach trips to local retirement communities and hospitals; a student and faculty led Family Concert for local area children; a jazz improv workshop, special off-campus concerts held in places such as Greenport, Southold, Sag Harbor, and East Hampton, NY; and other non-musical activities including pre-practice stretching and aerobics, book club meetings, athletic field days, beach volleyball, scavenger hunts, and field trips.
Finally, on weekday evenings when orchestra does not meet, students, faculty, and staff gather as a group for video nights, musical charades, or group discussions on topics such as performance practice, artistic expression, and performance anxiety.
