The Summer Music School @ PMP’s annual Children’s Concert is an unforgettable experience for audiences of all ages. The tradition began four summers ago when Associate Director, Merry Peckham, brought her string quartet, the Cavani Quartet, to visit Shelter Island. As part of their visit, the quartet performed their signature children’s show for local kids and their families.
Since then, the show has become a local favorite. With the tent filled to capacity with families, the concert is full of fun musical information for kids and plenty of entertaining moments for adults.
The concert features great music, elaborate costumes, fun skits, and a musical instrument “petting zoo”. The instrumental petting zoo is especially popular, as it gives young audience members a chance to try out any of the string instruments that catch their attention during the show.
While the primary goal of the concert is to use classical music to inspire and entertain young local audiences, the concert is also a learning experience for the Program’s student participants. Yet another way that we are training the next generation of classical music leaders, the Children’s Concert teaches students how to make their craft accessible and engaging for all types of audiences.
