On Saturday, July 23, The Perlman Music Program (PMP) celebrated its Annual Summer Benefit in East Hampton. Generously hosted by Dorian and Gary Fuhrman, the evening was co-chaired by Kristy and James H. Clark and Sidney and Morgan Stark and celebrated PMP’s 17th summer season on the East End of Long Island. Founded by Toby Perlman 17 years ago, The Perlman Music Program offers unparalleled musical training to young string players of rare and special talent.
With a world-class faculty led by Itzhak Perlman, the New York City and Shelter Island, NY based program seeks to develop the future leaders of classical music, all within a nurturing and supportive musical community. The evening’s highlight was a choral and orchestral performance presented by the program’s talented young students. The PMP Chorus, led by Maestro Patrick Romano, performed masterworks by Haydn and Brahms, and Maestro Itzhak Perlman conducted the PMP String Orchestra’s in a rousing performance of Grieg and Bartok.
Finally, a surprise doo-wop performance by Itzhak Perlman, Patrick Romano, Alec Galambos and Peter Dugan was a memorable finale to the evening. They sang Billy Joel’s “For the Longest Time” and Calvin Carter’s “Goodnight, Sweetheart.” The event brought together supporters and friends to celebrate a historic step forward for the Program. In August 2011, the current 100-year old girls’ dormitory on PMP’s Shelter Island campus will be razed to make way for the Kristy and James H. Clark Arts Center.
Scheduled for completion in May 2012, this center will feature a recital hall suitable for chamber music, orchestral, and choral performances for an audience of fifty, ten practice rooms constructed with state-of-the-art soundproof materials, and a teaching studio appropriate for private instruction, masterclasses, and ensemble coachings. In addition, this new building will provide a modern and comfortable living space for female students.
The Kristy and James H. Clark Arts Center will allow PMP to function year-round on Shelter Island, effectively doubling its programming in support of the most talented young string players in the world.
