First year master’s candidate Julia Michelle Carrasco Barnett was born and raised in La Mesa, California. She received her Bachelor’s of Music in flute performance from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in 2007 as a student of Leone Buyse. Prior to her studies at Rice, she was a winner of the San Diego Symphony Concerto Competition, and the La Jolla Symphony Young Artist Competition.
In the summer of 2004 she won a scholarship to attend the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors and Orchestral Musicians set on the coast of Maine. Similarly, she spent the summer in North Carolina, attending the Brevard Music Festival, where she won a scholarship as well in 2005. She has participated in master classes by Marianne Gedigian, Kathleen Chastain, and Mark Sparks. Ms. Barnett has performed in numerous solo and chamber recitals, as well as with the Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra and Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra.
Her solo concert appearances include performances with the San Diego Symphony and the San Diego Chamber Orchestra. In November 2006, she premiered Jacob Barton’s ¡AY! ¡AY! ¡AY! ¡AY! a work for Flute, Percussion and Kalimba, based upon Mexican folk songs. Some of her former teachers include Leone Buyse, Claude Montuex, Clay Ellerbroek, Adan Provencio, and Elizabeth Buck.
She also enjoys teaching students of varying abilities and age ranges. Ms. Barnett spent the summer of 2006 in Kolkata, India, working with orphans and abandoned children. Teaching English and playing lots of games, she also learned how to dance and sing some songs in Hindi.
